The docking clamps locked with a sound like a hammer striking rusted iron. Wren Elias felt the vibration through the soles of her boots, up through her shins, settling somewhere behind her sternum. The Gilt Coyote groaned. She hated that sound — the one the ship made when it settled into a berth it didn't trust.

"Clamps green," Cass's voice crackled over the comms. "But the port strut's singing again. Don't get your hopes up about a clean departure."

"Understood," Wren said. She killed the throttle and let the cockpit fall quiet except for the low thrum of the shear-drive cooling down. Ozone hung in the air, sharp and chemical, mixing with the stale coffee that never quite left the cup holder on the starboard console. She rubbed her thumb along the rim of that cup, feeling the crust of dried grounds.

The manifest said cargo transfer. The manifest lied.
